I’m ashamed to say that this year will be the first that I’ve put real effort into having a tree. Felt it was necessary not that I own a place. (used to move around a lot)
I had a hard time making a decision to go real or not. I’m not a huge fan of killing a tree to hold up a bunch of lights for a few weeks …but I’m greedy, for a real Christmas you need a real tree damn it!
Then a few weeks back I was at Rona (Canadian Hardware Store/Depot) and spotted all these weird little trees dolled up with lights and decorations. Of course I forget the actual name of the species, (if anyone knows please post – some kind of fir?) but the girl referred to them as an “upside-down Christmas tree”. As you might have guessed, the branches grow upward and out. It can also have multiple trunks which really fill out the tree.
Anyhow, I had found my solution. These little trees (they can get quite huge if you keep moving them into larger pots) are the new-age holiday trees!
- They’re real
- No petroleum based fake tree shipped from China
- It’s soft to the touch, not prickly
- No need to toss them away after, they’re stylish! (although I still want a giant palm tree for the living room)
Top it off with some low wattage LED lights and you’re good to go. Just need to leave out the plate of cookies and cold beer -err I mean glass of milk for Santa.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Congrats on the book. I knew you’d be getting one of those out eventually. More to come?
Picked up my first Flex book and am scheming on creating a nicer UI for an ERP we’re implementing here that looks like it was designed by programmers for programmers. When I’m ready for the meatier stuff, I’ll be checking out the Stacy Young shelf at Borders.
Keep up the good work, bro. -Militia- forever
